South Indian River Fishing Report 3/11

Inshore:

March continues to be on the windy side, but it is still tolerable on most days out on the river. The ocean will still be challenging to get out though. We have continued to enjoy good success fishing the flats with a variety of fish to keep you busy. It's been another fun week out there!

Trout have been feeding on the flats in two to five feet of water. Harbor Branch, Bear Point and Middle Cove have all been good lately. DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits and live bait have all worked well on the trout. Some days can be a challenge with the winds, but the fish are out there. We continue to pick up some redfish around the mangroves. Most of the bites have been right under them so plan on catching a few tree limbs in the process. We have also lost several to the mangroves, too. CAL grub tails and live bait will both help you catch a redfish.

Snook fishing was very good during the full moon this month. Feather jigs and live bait was the most popular ways to fish for them around the bridges, seawalls and jetties at night. You can still find a lot of sheephead around the river. The best places to find them along with some black drum is around the bridges and docks of the river. Live or dead shrimp is the bait of choice. The beaches have held whiting, some pompano and bluefish.

Lots of ladyfish and jacks are on the flats. You can also find some blues in the mix. It's been a good week fishing the river and things will only get better as spring arrives and the weather transition is finished. Expect more windy days this month and into April. Plan you trips around the winds and utilize them to your advantage. Have fun out there!
