Inshore:
Windy days and some scattered rain showers....it must still be March! The weather continues in the normal March fashion and you can expect more blustery days ahead. The temperatures still are fantastic and so is the fishing out there. We have been able to get out most days and use the winds to our advantage in finding and catching fish.
Trout continues to be the best bite on the river for us. We have fished both north and south of Fort Pierce with good success on most of the usual flats. Harbor Branch & Queen's Cove to the north and Bear Point & the west shoreline to the south are some of the better spots for us this week. Duncan Haley was down from Virginia and we caught over thirty trout in three to five feet of water on DOA CAL jerk baits, 419, 416 and 407 colors. I like a 1/16 oz. jig head to keep it from digging into the grass.
Our redfish have come from some of the docks along Indian River Drive this week. When the winds allow you to fish that side of the river, you can find lots of different species hanging around them. Sheephead, snapper, sea trout and other hungry fish will be hanging under the docks this time of year.
The snook bite has been good for the night anglers using feather jigs and live bait around the jetties, docks and bridges of the inlet. There have been some big jacks cruising around the turning basin this week. Mike and Sharon were out fishing with me this week. Before we went out for some nice trout fishing, Sharon hooked into a big jack that took her half an hour to get to the boat. She was one determined lady! Later she boated some big trout to finish off a good morning.
The surf has produced whiting, pompano and bluefish this week on clams, sand fleas and shrimp for the beach anglers. We still have a few weeks of windy days to endure, but you can still find plenty of places to fish in spite of what mother nature blows our way. Have fun and get out fishing!
