South Indian River Fishing Report 10/19

Inshore:

The rain and winds continue around the area this week. The water is still dirty and will remain that way for some time ahead. I am seeing some cleaner water coming in the Fort Pierce inlet the high ends of the tide, but it still has a long way to go before the run off is over. There are still lots of mullet in the river being chased by the predators.

I had Amie, Jake, Taylor and Gaige on the boat over the weekend. The weather was nice, but the dirty water made it a challenge. The kids started catching lots of snapper and Taylor ended up the morning with a 22" redfish to top off the day. John and Mike were out with me on a windy morning with lots of rain clouds around us. The guys caught trout, jacks and ladyfish before the rains drove us off the water. The DOA Outdoor Writers Festival was this over this past week. I had Sue on the boat and we managed ten snook and a dozen trout along with several other species, all caught on DOA lures. The sizes weren't much to brag on, but we had plenty action that day. Ethan was out with me on a slow morning. We ran across a ten foot alligator that had washed down with all the run off in Taylor Creek. He seemed lost and hopefully he finds his way back upstream.

There has been a good trout bite lately with lots of juvenile fish to be had. The DOA shrimp is one of the best choices for fishing anywhere on the river. New Penny has been our best color for the dirty water conditions. Work your lures slowly this time of year as the water temperatures fall. Our redfish have come while fishing mangroves and docks. There are lots of juvenile snook around the mangroves, too. Look for some tarpon around the inlet area.

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it's an ADVENTURE!

Fish Tales 10/12

Inshore:

Winds and rain continued on the Treasure Coast this past week. It has been a challenge most days, but the fishing has been good when you can get out. As we continue to transition into winter patterns, remember to work your lures and baits slowly. As the water cools down, the fish will move much slower until the sun warms things up each day. Watch the weather, plan your trips carefully and enjoy the great fishing action around the Treasure Coast.

The Murphy’s were out with me on a windy, but dry morning recently. The trout bite has picked up north of Fort Pierce around Harbor Branch. DOA Deadly Combos and live bait have worked good on the trout lately. Don’t forget to use top water lures early and soft plastics later in the mornings. Look for redfish around bridges, docks and mangroves this time of year. DOA shrimp or live bait has been good for redfish. The snook bite has been good around docks, bridges and jetties, especially night fishing.

Lots of decent sized snapper are in the river now. Try around bridges and channel edges for a chance at a dinner sized snapper. Live or dead shrimp usually work best and a DOA paddle tail can get you a hit as well. The mullet run is still going strong. Look for tarpon around the inlets and along the beaches. Try deep canals for juvenile tarpon. The DOA Terror Eyz is a favorite for tarpon.

Water quality is still dirty and that will take some time to clear up with all the rain we have been receiving. Look for cleaner or moving water for your best chances at finding fish.

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it's an ADVENTURE!

Fish Tales 10/5

Inshore:

The weather lately has been windy and wet....lots of it! Every time things seem to settle down....here it comes again. It's been tough getting anything done outside, especially fishing. I have had to cancel several charters due to conditions. So far, fall has not been kind to us on the Treasure Coast.

We did get out a few days recently. The Michael Shields Memorial Inshore Tournament was held recently. Mike Burke and sons, Cameron and Rhys, were out with me for the tourney. Cameron and Rhys had a good morning catching lots of fish early in the day. Five year old Rhys caught the most fish that morning. The boys did catch a good number of trout and were able to turn in three for the tournament. The guys were real troopers and fishing the entire morning! The October Treasure Coast Casters Tournament was also held recently. I had Michael and Nick on the boat. It was a tough morning to fish with windy conditions and dirty water everywhere. The boys caught fish, but it took all morning before we caught something on the fish list. Nick caught a nice mangrove snapper and it turned out to be the only fish weighed that morning. Nick won first place in Middle School Division and biggest fish.

Water is still dirty and very high. It's going to take a while to get cleaned up as long and the rains continue. Look for any cleaner water or where the water is moving for your best chances. There have been tarpon in the inlets and turning basin. Snook have been in the same places along with docks and bridges. The trout bite has been north of Fort Pierce around Harbor Branch. Snapper have been along channel edges and some good sized ones are in the river. Plan your trips wisely and have fun...when you can get out!

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it's an ADVENTURE!
