Inshore:
Lots of great fishing action around the river this week along the Treasure Coast. March continues in its normal windy fashion, but you can generally find plenty of areas to fish and stay out of the worst of it. We have had a lot of fun this month and the coming week should provide us with lots more fishing adventures on the river.
Trout continued to be our best bite this week. We fished north of Fort Pierce just about the entire week due to the windy conditions and found trout hanging around Queen's Cove, Harbor Branch and Round Island. Live bait or CAL jerk baits have been successful for us. Joe and Henry found enough good sized trout for a nice dinner for the family. We have also found a variety of other species out on the flats as well. Mangrove snapper, bluefish, jacks and ladyfish have kept us busy in between the trout bites. Peter, Will and Henry found a good variety out there on their trip.
We finally got down south to some of the docks and found redfish, flounder and sheephead hanging under some of the docks. Fred and Mike caught five reds along with sheephead and a nice flounder from the docks. The Spanish mackerel have been coming in on the rising tides and filling up the turning basin. Small shiny jigs have helped us to catch some nice sized macks. You can also find lots of jacks around the same area. Sharon hooked into a big jack that took her 30 minutes to bring it to the boat.
The winds will continue for a while longer, but the fishing has been good. Lots of sunshine with some mixed in rain clouds this week have made it wonderful to enjoy the water. Have fun and get out fishing!
As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

Inshore:
Windy days and some scattered rain showers....it must still be March! The weather continues in the normal March fashion and you can expect more blustery days ahead. The temperatures still are fantastic and so is the fishing out there. We have been able to get out most days and use the winds to our advantage in finding and catching fish.
Trout continues to be the best bite on the river for us. We have fished both north and south of Fort Pierce with good success on most of the usual flats. Harbor Branch & Queen's Cove to the north and Bear Point & the west shoreline to the south are some of the better spots for us this week. Duncan Haley was down from Virginia and we caught over thirty trout in three to five feet of water on DOA CAL jerk baits, 419, 416 and 407 colors. I like a 1/16 oz. jig head to keep it from digging into the grass.
Our redfish have come from some of the docks along Indian River Drive this week. When the winds allow you to fish that side of the river, you can find lots of different species hanging around them. Sheephead, snapper, sea trout and other hungry fish will be hanging under the docks this time of year.
The snook bite has been good for the night anglers using feather jigs and live bait around the jetties, docks and bridges of the inlet. There have been some big jacks cruising around the turning basin this week. Mike and Sharon were out fishing with me this week. Before we went out for some nice trout fishing, Sharon hooked into a big jack that took her half an hour to get to the boat. She was one determined lady! Later she boated some big trout to finish off a good morning.
The surf has produced whiting, pompano and bluefish this week on clams, sand fleas and shrimp for the beach anglers. We still have a few weeks of windy days to endure, but you can still find plenty of places to fish in spite of what mother nature blows our way. Have fun and get out fishing!

South Indian River Fishing Report 3/11
March 11, 2012
Inshore:
March continues to be on the windy side, but it is still tolerable on most days out on the river. The ocean will still be challenging to get out though. We have continued to enjoy good success fishing the flats with a variety of fish to keep you busy. It's been another fun week out there!
Trout have been feeding on the flats in two to five feet of water. Harbor Branch, Bear Point and Middle Cove have all been good lately. DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits and live bait have all worked well on the trout. Some days can be a challenge with the winds, but the fish are out there. We continue to pick up some redfish around the mangroves. Most of the bites have been right under them so plan on catching a few tree limbs in the process. We have also lost several to the mangroves, too. CAL grub tails and live bait will both help you catch a redfish.
Snook fishing was very good during the full moon this month. Feather jigs and live bait was the most popular ways to fish for them around the bridges, seawalls and jetties at night. You can still find a lot of sheephead around the river. The best places to find them along with some black drum is around the bridges and docks of the river. Live or dead shrimp is the bait of choice. The beaches have held whiting, some pompano and bluefish.
Lots of ladyfish and jacks are on the flats. You can also find some blues in the mix. It's been a good week fishing the river and things will only get better as spring arrives and the weather transition is finished. Expect more windy days this month and into April. Plan you trips around the winds and utilize them to your advantage. Have fun out there!
As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Forecast - March

South Indian River Fishing Forecast - March
Inshore:
March has arrived on the Treasure Coast and, traditionally, we can expect windy conditions along with some rain clouds. It might dictate where and when you can get on the water, but at least we aren't cutting holes in the ice to fish! Water temperatures will continue to rise and the fish will be actively feeding on the flats. Winter has been kinder to us this year and the fishing has been very good so far. Take advantage of the good days and get out fishing.....
As the sun warms up the water again, look for fish to travel into the shallows to feed. Trout will continue to be most prevalent in the deeper grass flats in two to four feet of water. Those anglers using live shrimp on popping corks, Deadly Combos, CAL jerk baits and top water will have the best chance at hooking up with a trout. I like to fish the edges of the shallows where the water drops off to these depths. You can find some trout on the flats early, but they tend to go deeper after sunup. Depending on weather conditions, there are many areas to fish. Round Island, Bear Point and Harbor Branch are always popular to fish in March.
Redfish will get more active this month and you can find some tailing on the flats in early mornings. Top water, DOA shrimp, CAL grub tails or gold spoons are good choices for finding a spot tail on the flats. Don't forget to fish around the mangroves also. So far this winter, there has continued to be a good redfish population around the river and the fishing has been fantastic for them. I tend to like the east side of the river for redfish, but you can find them on the west side also. Work your baits slowly along the bottom for best results. Learn to read the water so you don’t miss what is happening around you.
Anglers will continue to target snook around the inlets, docks and bridges on the Treasure Coast. Live bait always works best, but feather jigs, TerrorEyz and BFL lures can also get you hooked up. Most of the action will be at night with best results on the high ends of the tides. As the water warms up around the area, the snook action will liven up also. Those fishing the flats can also find snook feeding early or late in the day. Fish the mangroves during the rest of the day. Top water, twitch baits, TerrorEyz or CAL jerk baits can do the trick in March on the flats.
The pompano bite has been better this year. More fish have been caught around Fort Pierce this year and they should be around this area throughout March. Whiting, Bluefish and pompano will be hanging around the beaches this month. The inlet will be holding Spanish mackerel, jacks and bluefish. Jack Crevalle and ladyfish continue to haunt the river and provide fun catch for all. Bridges should give up catches of sand perch, Sheephead and black drum on live or dead
shrimp.
I think we are all ready for spring to arrive here on the Treasure Coast. It won't be long! Take some time to check all your equipment now and be ready as the weather improves to get out on the water. Make sure your reels are in good working order. Check your rods for broken or cracked tips and guides. How old in that line?? Get ready now on some of the windy days, so you will be ready to head out to the water! Have a great March for fishing!
