South Indian River Fishing Report 4/19

Inshore:

It appears the rainy season has arrived on the Treasure Coast. It has been very dry this winter and the rains are a welcome sight for us. It means that you need to watch the weather and plan your fishing adventures accordingly. The creeks and rivers will be pouring into the Indian and St Lucie rivers bringing dirty water into the area. Fishing the high parts of the tides will give you the best water each day. Temperatures are getting warmer and I am happy with that! After the March we endured, I won't complain at all!

Snook fishing has been good around the area the past few weeks. The last of the incoming and first of the outgoing tides have provided us with the best bite. It's a great time of year to use top water lures like the DOA PT-7 or your favorite lure for both snook and trout. Switch to the DOA Deadly Combo once the sun is high. We are still catching our redfish around the docks both north and south of Fort Pierce. There are some nice snapper around the river now.

Al, Kiera, Jake and Kevin found the sheepshead and jacks biting on their recent adventure. The Welch family also caught sheepshead and other species for a fun day. Dave and Matt caught jacks and a nice redfish to top off the day. Mel and Duane found the snook bite good, but couldn't find a slot fish to keep. John, Brendon and Collin also found a good snook bite. John caught a nice keeper cubera snapper as well. Bob and Jack also found a good snook bite that found several near slot fish. It was an awesome time on the water!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Report 4/11

Inshore:

Spring finally arrived as April arrived on the Treasure Coast. March was really a cold and windy month. We will still get winds in April, but it should be somewhat milder conditions. It's nice to have warm weather again and maybe I can finally put all the winter clothes away for this year. Enjoy the good fishing this month!

It's been a busy week or two out there. Lots of old friends back in town and meeting some new clients as well. Jack and Connor were back this year. Lots of sheepshead on the catch list! Ron and Mike were out with me on a windy day that found pompano, sheepshead, snapper and drum biting for us. Will and Jean were out several times with me and it was a long list of fish that they caught no matter what the weather threw at them. Francis and Faith were back down and found sheepshead to be the best bite of the day. Chris, Chuck and Amelia were out on a nice morning that found croakers, sheepshead, grouper and sand perch among the many fish that they caught. Patrick, Sean, Braedon and Brooklyn were out with me and the kids had a blast catching lots of fish that included two snook the round out a good day on the water. Don and grandson, Eli, had an awesome day catching some big croakers. Eli decided the moon fish he caught was his favorite. It was a fun and exciting week on the water!

There has been a good variety of fish to target. I have had lots of kids on the boat lately and seeing their smiles just makes your day. Dock fishing has improved as the winds let up enough to fish them. Lots of jacks around the river are a favorite of the kids. Have fun and enjoy the fishing in April!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

April Fishing Forecast

Treasure Coast Fishing Forecast - April 2018

As March blows out of the area, you can still plan on some windy days ahead in April. The transition into the summer pattern is well under way and soon the winds will die down and you can enjoy those calm days of summer once again. Expect the fishing to be especially good this April as water temperatures warm up and spring takes over the area. March was a little warmer this year and the fishing has been good. As the river fills with bait schools, you can bet the fish are hungry and will be feeding heavily. Have fun and enjoy the fishing!

Redfish and trout will become more active around the flats. They will be shallow early and gradually move to the edges of the flats as the sun get higher in the sky. Look to areas like Bear Point, Harbor Branch and Round Island for trout to be feeding on the flats. On a calm morning, break out the top water lures and switch to jerk baits, like a DOA CAL 4” Arkansas Glow or Watermelon. Shallow running Mirrolures will also entice the trout into biting. Don’t forget to use the Deadly Combo or CAL Airhead for more exciting trout action on the grass flats. There has been a lot of redfish activity throughout March and it should make April a fantastic month. Redfish can be found on sandy flats around the docks or try the Moorings and Bear Point for a chance at a nice size red. DOA shrimp or CAL grub tails in root beer or glow colors are great ways to find a redfish along with a trusty gold spoon.

The snook season has many anglers out seeking that slot fish this year. The bite has been good around the inlets and will improve on the flats as well. Snook season will close May 31st so you still have time to find that slot fish. We have had good luck with the DOA TerrorEyz on snook this winter. Docks will hold sheepshead, jacks, redfish and many other species. I like either a DOA 2 ¾” shrimp or TerrorEyz around docks. Fish them slowly to keep them under the dock as long as possible. Drop a live shrimp or pinfish under a dock as well for a great chance at hooking up. There are many great areas to fish so plan on getting some fishing in this month.

Bridges will continue to hold sheephead, jacks, bluefish and some black drum. The big jacks will be invading the river this month. They are not great to eat, but provide a tough battle on light tackle. Ladyfish will be all over the river and keep the kids smiling. The inlet will continue to hold bluefish, jacks and mackerel. While April might be a little windy, it is still a great month to fish the Indian River.

April is the first month that fish can enjoy all the many baitfish schools and they will be feeding heavily on the schools around the flats. The water has already been warming up and you can see the changes in the bite already. Early morning can bring lots of good results this time of year. It was a cooler winter this year and the fish are anxious to enjoy the arrival of the bait schools…..and so are we!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!
