November Fishing Forecast

November Fishing Forecast

November is always a fun month to enjoy the fishing along the Treasure Coast. We are in the middle of our winter transition and you can also count on cooler temperatures that will start the thermometer sliding when it comes to the water temps as well. The days will remain nice and warm, but the nights will become cooler this month. It’s time to change your fishing tactics out on the water. We enjoyed a very mild winter this past year and hopefully it will be the same again this winter. The fall mullet run will continue into November and bring lots of action to the inlets, rivers and beaches throughout the area.

Trout will continue to be a target of many anglers. The trout bite will be good on the flats, but you must move to the deeper areas as the temperatures cool the water down. Look for them to be in three to six feet of water this month. My favorite lures are DOA shrimp or Deadly Combos when trout fishing. Don’t forget to fish the sand holes and drop offs on the flats. Many sand holes are much deeper than the flat and you can expect some nice fish to be hiding in them waiting for that easy meal to drift by. Harbor Branch is especially productive for me during this time of year as well as the Midway Road area. The pompano beginning to return to the river and will be a favorite target for anglers throughout the winter. When fishing the surf, use sand fleas or clams and the same in the river. Don’t forget to try a Doc’s Goofy Jig for the pomps. Many are located when they skip behind the boat wake. Keep your eyes open for them.

The snook bite will continue to be good, especially at night. The inlet, jetties, bridges and docks around the river will be holding snook. Lighted docks are very popular when night fishing. Live baits, Bait Busters and Terror Eyz are very popular for snook fishing. Don’t forget the spillways when the water is running over them. They can be another very productive area for snook. Redfish can be found hanging under mangroves during the day and will strike a DOA shrimp or CAL jerk bait. You might also find some hanging under some of the docks around the river. Look for them in shallow water as long as the sun keeps the temperatures warm. I love the CAL grub tails this time of year around the mangroves. A gold spoon can be another good lure in winter for hooking up on a redfish. We had a record year for over slot redfish this year. The population continues to grow in our area.

Docks and bridges will hold black drum, sheepshead and the sand perch should also show up this month. Live or dead shrimp always works best on these fish. I love fishing docks this time of year. You just never know what might be lurking under one. I fish my lures from up tide of the dock, so that it will stay under the dock. You only have to twitch it and can fish it much longer that way. It’s always a challenge in getting a fish out from under one, but the excitement is well worth it. You should still find some flounder around on the sand flats of the inlet and river. The mackerel, bluefish and jacks will fill up the inlet this month. Most shiny lures will work on these predators. You can also find them hanging in the channels up around Harbor Branch. It might be breezy out there…..but the fish will be feeding!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Report 10/22

Inshore:

It has been another week of awesome weather and good fishing on the Treasure Coast! Some windy conditions and a few rain clouds in the mix, but overall fair weather has been the norm lately. The temperatures have become milder and that has cooled the water off as well. Fall has arrived and that means the snow birds are heading south for the winter. It's a great time to get in some fishing!

We have had a good mix of fish around the area and that has kept anglers busy catching. We have found redfish around docks, mangroves and grass flats. The redfish population continues to grow each year. Lots of over size fish have been caught this year around the river. DOA shrimp, CAL paddle tails and live or cut bait has all worked great on the redfish this year. Snook have been around the jetties, docks and sea walls. Feather jigs, DOA bait busters and live bait can all get you into the action. Don't forget top water lures for redfish, snook and trout this time of year. Trout have been on all the usual grass flats.

Lots of other species are spread all over the river this week. Snapper, jacks, ladyfish and mackerel are just a few of the many species available to anglers this month. Look for the first arrivals of pompano to show up this month as well. Small shiny lures work very well on all these species when they are feeding around the area. Look for birds and top water action to help you locate many of these fish. The surf will be yielding pompano and whiting this time of year. Any remnants of the mullet run will be good to fish for snook, jacks and bluefish. There will be tarpon around these bait fish, too. It's an awesome time of year to enjoy the fishing along the Treasure Coast!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Report

Inshore:

Another week of wonderful weather and some good fishing days mark the arrival of fall to the Treasure Coast. As the mullet run continues for now, look for the bait schools to find the hungry fish. The fish are feeding heavily in anticipation of winter months coming ahead. October is a fantastic month to enjoy the fishing in our area. Mild weather will continue to dominate our weather pattern for now.

Michael and Paul were out with me this week. The guys caught a good variety of fish, including one decent snook and lots of snapper, sheepshead and other assorted species. Tom and Tom, Jr. were out on a busy day full of snapper and sheepshead around the docks and spending some time catching endless jacks, ladyfish and mackerel on the flats and they gorged themselves on the bait schools. It was some fun fishing for us this week. Nighttime fishing around the docks and bridges have been productive for snook anglers. Trout and redfish have been on the flats in the mornings. Use top water lures to start your day for some explosive results. You can continue to use those top water lures on cloudy and overcast days throughout the morning. Switch to DOA shrimp or CAL jerk baits as the sun rises to continue to fish for trout and redfish. Mackerel, jacks and ladyfish have been following the bait schools in with the tides and crashing the bait schools around the river. It's a fun time of year to fish!

Top water lures provide lots of excitement this time of year. There are many brands and types. I categorize them into two groups. Chugging lures like the Chug Bug brand and "walk the dog" types similar to Mirrolure Top Dog lures. Both types are productive! If you have never used top water lures, try the chugging types that are simple to use and can get you hooked on this kind of fishing. "Walk the dog" lures take a little practice to get a rhythm and pattern going and are very effective. I also love the DOA Bait Buster, which can be used as a top water or slow sinking lure. Even weedless hooked jerk baits can be used as a top water presentation with great results. This is the time of year to get out and use them! Have fun!

South Indian River Fishing Report

Inshore:

It has been some welcome gorgeous weather around the Treasure Coast this past week and it should continue as fall arrives. Temperatures will become milder and the water temps will begin to cool down as well. The mullet run is still going on strong this week. I believe that all that hot weather delayed the bait schools from arriving until lately. It's good to see all the bait out there. October should prove to be a super month to enjoy the fishing in our area.

I was out for a scouting trip with Capt. Adam White this week. We found a number of smaller snook feeding and boated one nice 31" slot fish for dinner. Top water lures continue to produce fish around the grass flats. Find the bait schools and you should find fish hanging on the edges. Keith and Cai Mullins were down for a visit and we got out on another beautiful morning. Keith landed one slot red and they caught a number of short snook and snapper around the docks in Fort Pierce. It was a nice morning to be on the water. There are plenty of big jacks cruising the river and chasing the bait schools. The turning basin will also be holding lots of bait. Try around the docks at night for snook. Look for trout on the grass flats. Bear Point, Harbor Branch and Queen's Cove are traditional good trout spots. As I said earlier...top water has worked fabulous! Switch to DOA shrimp or CAL jerk baits once the sun comes out. I have had a few reports of tarpon along the beach for surf anglers. Look for redfish around the mangroves and on the flats this time of year. It's a great time of year to be fishing!

Fall is fast approaching. It was one long, hot summer and it's wonderful to finally have some mild weather. All the recent high water has allowed us to get back into some places that you normally might not get. A lot of our fish have come from areas that are normally too shallow to fish. It's a nice change of pace. Have fun and get out fishing!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Report

Inshore:

After lots of rainy days, the weather seems to have gotten back to normal fall patterns. Afternoon chances of a thunderstorm with mostly gorgeous mornings to enjoy the fishing. We have had some awesome sunrises this past week to start the day. The weather should begin to start cooling off as fall arrives on the Treasure Coast. Water temperatures have been in the low to mid 80's. Enjoy the nice weather and get out fishing soon!

Water levels have been much higher than normal. Mostly due to the full moon and lots of rain, it has been a challenge with all the fresh water in the river. The fish have to eat and we have had our share of fun on the river. The mullet run is still going off around the area. Find the bait schools and you should find feeding fish around them.

Look for trout on the grass flats around Harbor Branch, Queen's Cove and Bear Point. Redfish have also been on the grass flats feeding. Top water lures have worked great for redfish, snook and trout lately. Work the lures on the edges of the bait schools. Captain Adam White won Top Captain for the second straight year at the Michael Shield's Memorial Tournament out of River Palms last weekend. His team caught all their fish on artificial lures and many came from top water lures. Mike and 8 year old, Cameron, were out with me for the tournament. We caught snook and Cameron enjoyed the dock fishing so much that we spent most of the morning catching jacks and snapper. Get out early and get in on the fun!

Docks have been holding lots of snapper with some nice sheepshead in the mix. There have been a lot of snook hanging under many of the docks as well. Nick caught a nice bluefish under one dock on a top water lure on a morning that provided a mix of fish including snook. The inlet has been full of mackerel, jacks and ladyfish feeding on glass minnows. Bridges can produce snapper, snook and sheepshead. There is a good variety of fish to be caught and lots of ways to fish for them. October should continue to provide some super action for Treasure Coast anglers!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!
