South Indian River Fishing Report 1/28

Winter weather has been hanging around the Treasure Coast lately. Temperatures in the 40's and 50's at night have cooled down the water recently, but daytime temps ranged in the 60's and 70's. The water has ranged from 59 to 68 degrees, but the fish have continued to bite for us. Winds have been blowing most days for us and that makes for a challenging day on the water!

We continue to catch redfish, black drum and sheepshead each trip with a few trout in the mix. You can also find some pompano, Spanish mackerel and a host of other fish to catch. Fishing deeper water has been good for us, while docks and mangroves continue to be productive. DOA shrimp has been the best artificial lure for us. Live shrimp will find plenty of sheepshead this time of year. Doc's Goofy Jigs are great when looking for pompano. I enjoy this time of year because of the variety of fish to be caught by anglers. It's a fun time of year to enjoy the fishing along the Treasure Coast.

Kevin and Chris had a good morning in spite of windy conditions. The landed five redfish along with black drum and sheepshead. Travis, James and Tyler had a nice morning. The guys caught sheepshead, jacks, snook and lots of other fish. Art, Ted and Chris found a good variety of fish, including mackerel, snapper, flounder and sheepshead. Steve and Pete caught the usual sheepshead, snapper and other species. Gloria and John also found a variety of fish on a windy day full of challenges. Gloria topped off the morning with a 29" redfish. Mike and Melinda had a good day in spite of another windy morning. It was a good week fishing with a lot of windy challenging days for us.

There are plenty of places to fish this time of year on windy days. Watch water temperatures and change your tactics when it is cooler water. Deeper channel edges and drop offs can be productive on cool days. Deeper docks will generally hold fish as well. On bright sunny days, look to the grass flats to hold fish soaking up the sunshine. Winter always presents a number of challenges for anglers, but you can be successful if you watch conditions and use them to your advantage.

Inshore:

January weather has continued to be kind to us....at least on most days. We deal with the regular cold fronts, winds and rainy days on a regular basis, but we have been able to enjoy the fishing on the Treasure Coast. Windy days will find us fishing along the mangroves around the river, while calmer days we will be hitting docks and grass flats as well. Water temperatures have ranged in the mid to upper sixties recently and that will keep the fish feeding for us. It won't be long before Spring arrives!

Redfish, black drum and sheepshead have been the best bite again this week. Whether fishing mangroves, docks or structure, we have continued to be successful each day on these species. DOA shrimp and live baits will find some nice size fish this time of year. You can also find juvenile snook and snapper around the mangroves. The best bite has been when the water temps have ranged in the upper 60 degrees. Around the inlet and turning basin, look for mackerel, bluefish and a host of other species this month. Small shiny lures will work best in these areas. There are plenty of ladyfish and jacks for those who just want to bend a rod. They are a favorite of the kids in January. We have been getting some trout on the grass flats on the warmer days on Deadly Combos. Most have been slot size trout. Have fun this month and enjoy the fishing along the Treasure Coast!

Don, Art and Sherman were back again this month to enjoy a morning on the river. The guys caught trout, snapper, black drum and sheepshead to make for a fun day on the water. Bob, Jim and Thomas found lots of fish including black drum, sheepshead, jacks and ladyfish to name a few of the many species they caught. Steve and Nick were back again this year for another fishing adventure. They caught redfish, drum, sheepshead and a nice pompano to round out a nice, rewarding trip on the Indian River. Mark was down for a visit and we got out on a cool morning. The water temperatures had dropped ten degrees in one day, so we scouted a good bit to find the fish, but had a great time fishing!

We will have our ups and downs with the temperatures this month. Dress in layers to be comfortable in January. Keep your rain gear handy for rainy days. It's been a damp month so far and we will most likely see more of the same weather conditions. Check the weather before you head out and be prepared to have some fun!

January has been kind to us so far this month. Last year the weather was horrible, but 2015 has been mild for the Treasure Coast. We have had some rainy days, but we have been able to fish despite of the rains. Look for some cold fronts moving through each week in January and adjust your fishing to the challenges. The water temperatures have been around 70 degrees lately and that will go up or down with the cold fronts. The fishing has been wonderful!

Redfish, black drum and sheepshead have been our best bites most days. DOA shrimp, CAL paddle tails and live bait can find you some exciting action this month around the area. Fishing docks, mangroves and structure around the river has rewarded my anglers with some nice fish for their efforts. Ron, Jessie and Jeremy topped off this weeks fishing by boating 10 slot size black drum and a redfish along with lots of other species. Larry and Charlie also had a great morning by catching black drum, redfish and sheepshead. Tom, Sherry, Andrew and Trevor had the same success on their morning adventure. Jeff, Ryan and Kyle had a rainy, windy day on the water, but caught some nice fish in spite of conditions. It was a fun week on the water!

Pompano have been moving around the river and will improve with cooler water. Mackerel will be coming into the inlets and provide both fun and food for anglers. Bluefish are in the inlets now as well. Water temperatures will fluctuate this month and you should keep an eye on it. Incoming tides will bring warmer water into the river and that can turn on the bite in areas. My magic number has always been 68 degrees. I fish deeper water as temperatures cool down and move onto the shallow water late in the mornings as the sun does its magic on temperatures. It's both fun and challenging this time of year!

January Fishing Forecast

In past several years, January has traditionally been a cold month around the Treasure Coast. Hopefully, 2015 will show us another mild winter and you won’t have to worry about the water temperatures as much this year. Fishing in deeper water will provide you with better results on most days. Working your lures and baits much slower will also give you a better chance at success. Fish tend to become lethargic in cold water and are slow in moving to strike at lures. Finding water that is a couple degrees warmer than the surrounding area can also give you an edge on finding fish. Water temperatures have been mild so far. We had great results last year on fishing deep sand holes on the flats that were being warmed by the sun. We will certainly be doing that again this year.

January is typically a windy month and it will continue the tradition if recent weather gives you an insight to the coming month. You might enjoy one or two days a week that is calmer, but expect it to be windy most days. Using the right ramps can make your day a little easier in dealing with the weather. There are many ramps around the area that allow you to launch depending on wind direction. The river can be rough some days, but you can still fish most days if you plan your trips carefully. It is a great month to fish in spite of weather conditions that might not be to your liking.

Bridges will continue to produce sheepshead, black drum, croakers, sand perch and bluefish. Most of the anglers on the catwalks prefer live or frozen shrimp for these fish. The inlet and turning basin will be full of bluefish, jacks and mackerel this month. Live or dead bait on a jig head will give you plenty of action along with silver spoons or shiny lures. Around seawalls, channel edges or deeper structure you can find grouper for catch and release action in January. Snook action around the jetties and bridges will be active mostly at night for anglers using feather jigs, Terror Eyz and live bait. Snook closed on December 15th, so it will be catch and release for them.

Redfish can be found around docks and sitting on the flats on warm, sunny days. DOA shrimp, Terror Eyz or CAL jerk baits work great for wintertime fishing. We had fantastic results around mangroves for redfish last year. CAL paddle tails in the 411 color were a hit with the reds. Docks will be loaded with sheepshead in January with nice sized fish. They have moved in early this year and have been hungry! Pompano fishing will depend on water temperatures for their location, but they will be in the area throughout the winter. Surf anglers will be targeting these fish on days when the beach is fishable. Flounder should be found around the jetties on the beach side and on sand flats around the inlet. If you can find warmer water on the flats, you will most likely find trout feeding in those areas. Last year, we were rewarded many days as the sun would warm up a patch of water and get the fish actively feeding. Trout fishing in 2014 rewarded us with many big fish in the 25” to 30” range. CAL jerk baits and Deadly Combos were very successful on the trout, and 2015 should prove to be another good year. Ladyfish and jacks will be all over the river for fun action for the little ones.

January Tips: Dress for the weather. We might get one or two days each week that might be warmer, but most days will be on the cooler side. There can be a 30 degree swing in temperature on some days. Dressing in layers can keep you comfortable throughout the day in January. Once you become cold, it's hard to warm back up again. Keep yourself comfortable and enjoy some good fishing in January. Stay warm and safe and enjoy the winter!
