South Indian River Fishing Report 6/29

Inshore:

Well, July is here and it's been the typical hot weather on the Treasure Coast. I don't complain about the heat, because I hate the cold weather. We usually have an ocean breeze to keep the temperatures from getting too hot on the water. Drink lots of fluids and make sure to splather on that sunscreen this time of year! July might be hot, but it's fun on the water.

I had the privilege to be invited to the annual DOA Outdoor Writers Event again this year. Lot of fun meeting old friends and making new ones. Oh, and seeing more and more gray hair each year.... I had Glenn, Tom and Gary fishing with me this year. It was slow fishing in Fort Pierce, but we managed to catch some fish in spite of the bite. It's always a fun event for everyone. I had Tom on the boat with Isaac and Jeremiah later this week. The guys caught a lot of fish including a nice 28" sea trout to top off the morning. Scott and Connor joined me on a beautiful morning. They caught a variety of fish and lost a few big fish that wouldn't come to the boat.

Fish the deeper cuts and flats of the river this month with the hot weather. Use top water lures in the early mornings and switch to DOA shrimp or CAL jerk baits as the sun rises. We are using a 1/16th or 1/8th ounce jig head on the soft plastics. Bear Point, Harbor Branch and Queen's Cove have all been active with bait. The snapper have been moving into the river and you will find some nice mangroves around the area. Fish the docks, channel edges or bridges for a chance for some snapper for dinner. Look for the glass minnows to be moving into the river this month and bringing a host of predators to feed on them. July is always a super month to fish the area. Watch for the redfish to begin schooling up this month on the flats. Move across the flats slowly and keep your eyes on the water to find some nice schools this month. DOA shrimp is always a good choice for redfish. Snook fishing around the bridges and jetties will be dependent of the tides and should find a good bite on the last of the incoming and first of the outgoing tides.

Have a fun month and enjoy the fishing on the Treasure Coast! Beat the heat and get out early before the afternoon storms brew up. Early mornings are good times to enjoy the top water fishing and watch the gorgeous sunrises on the coast.

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it’s an ADVENTURE!

July Fishing Forecast

July Fishing Forecast

July brings hot weather, chances of afternoon rains and Fourth of July parties. Oh....and lots of great fishing out there, too! Watch out for afternoon thunderstorms this month. Mornings on the river will bring action at first light on top water lures for snook or trout along the flats. They will seek deeper water as the sun rises. It’s a hot, but very productive month around the Treasure Coast.

I will be fishing along the mangroves for snook and redfish with DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits and top water lures, like the DOA Airhead, where the water will be 2-3 feet deep. Trout will move to deeper flats in 2-6 feet of water and will most likely hit pigfish, DOA shrimp or Deadly Combos. Look for the trout to move to the deeper edges of the flats as the sun warms up the water. Fish the sand holes on the flats! You will find the bigger fish sitting in these holes waiting on the tides to bring the food to them. It has been another banner year for big trout around the area. Redfish will continue to hold up on the flats. Read the water as you move across the flats and look for any activity that might be a school of reds. Gold spoons, soft baits, like DOA shrimp or CAL jerk baits will work best for them. Search along the docks during the day for snook or redfish hanging around there as well. It’s a fantastic month to be fishing!

Bridges will be producing snapper, drum and sheepshead during July. Live or dead shrimp will be hard for them to resist. Watch the tides and fish the slower sides of them for best results. Whiting will continue to be in the surf with the occasional bluefish and Spanish mackerel. There will be larger snapper in the river around structure and along channel edges. Sharks will be patrolling along the beach also. The glass minnows will be flowing into the river in huge schools. Watch for these bait schools and fish the edges for your best action.

Areas to fish in the river for July: Bear Point, Queen's Cove and Round Island. South of Harbor Branch will be a great area to work for trout in the mornings before the sun heats up things. The flats in front of the power plant taper off to 3-5 feet and will be holding trout during the day. Live pigfish are the favorite food for trout this time of year. It’s time to set the traps to feed these hungry fish! Try a DOA TerrorEyz or the DOA Airhead during the day also for trout. The west shore down there will be good areas to search out redfish. Channel edges will be yielding snapper on structure. Tripletail will be around channel markers and pilings to the south towards Jensen Beach. Have a fun month out there!

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it’s an ADVENTURE!

South Indian River Fishing Report 6/14

Inshore:

Mornings have been wonderful out on the water lately. Afternoons....well, that's another thing entirely. Afternoon thunderstorms have been a daily routine and that is your typical summertime weather pattern this time of year. Getting on the water early means you have the morning to enjoy the fishing and you can get back to the dock before the storms arrive. There have been some violent storms recently so plan your trips wisely and stay safe out there.

We have enjoyed a variety of fish on recent adventures. Greg, Mike and Kyoko found a variety of fish on their adventure. Mike had the best day with a couple nice trout and a four foot Bonnethead shark to top off the trip. Bob had a decent trout bite on the flats on a beautiful morning. The trout bite has picked up on the grass flats for us this week. Fishing on grass flats in three to five feet of water has worked best for us. You can find some shallow at first light on top water lures and move to the deeper flats as the sun rises. DOA shrimp, Deadly Combos and live bait will all get you some trout bites. Our redfish bite was a little slower this past week. We are still finding them hanging under mangroves around the river. The snook bite around the jetties has been a steady bite for anglers fishing at night. You can find lots of jacks and ladyfish throughout the river to keep the kids busy. June offers lots of fishing opportunities around the area.

Offshore has been a super bite lately on the dolphin in 150' to 180' of water while trolling ballyhoo. The bottom bite has also been good on snapper and grouper on the wrecks and reefs. The weather has cooperated for the offshore anglers this past week. Anglers have been waiting for good weather and taking advantage of the good bite to enjoy some good catches this week. Enjoy the summer and have lots of fun on the water!

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it’s an ADVENTURE!

South Indian River Fishing Report 6/9

Inshore:

It's been typical summertime weather around the Treasure Coast so far this month. Beautiful sunny mornings to enjoy and lots of afternoon chances of thunderstorms. Watching the sunrise lately has been breathtaking! Expect these conditions throughout the rest of summer. It's a wonderful time of year to enjoy the fishing around the area. I love this time of year!

We have enjoyed a variety of fish on the river lately. Redfish, trout, snapper and a few snook on the flats. Steve and Nick found a variety of fish on a fun filled morning. Rhonda and Jim were out on a challenging day. It ended up windy, but they caught plenty of fish in spite of conditions. Captain Adam White and I took a day to explore some other areas around the river. We found a few nice trout and enjoyed a scenic adventure to areas I haven't fished in a while. It was a nice week on the water.

We are finding trout in shallow water on the grass flats at first light. Top water lures will get you some good strikes by some nice size fish. Move to the edges of the flats as the sun gets higher and switch to DOA shrimp or CAL jerk baits. Docks have also been holding a nice variety of fish this week. Mangroves can hold redfish, snook and snapper under the shadow lines. There has been lots of baitfish around the area. Fish around bait schools when you see them. Lots of big fish will follow the bait schools this time of year.

Offshore fishing has been fantastic so far this month. Dolphin, kingfish and cobia are just a few of the species that anglers have enjoyed catching in June. Bottom fishing for snapper and grouper has also been outstanding for those anglers. Everyone endures the challenges of winter and spring weather to get to this time of year when both the weather and fishing are super!

Summer is a time when you must prepare for both sunshine and heat when out on the water. Sunscreen and fluids are essential this time of year. A little precaution can save a lot of pain! Enjoy the summer and have fun out there!

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it’s an ADVENTURE!

South Indian River Fishing Report 5/31

Inshore:

Summertime has arrived on the Treasure Coast! Lots of blue skies and chances of afternoon rain is the norm this time of year. Mornings has been the best weather for us lately and the winds have calmed down quite a bit on the water. Water temperatures have warmed up into the mid to upper 70's. June promises to be a super month to enjoy the fishing in the area.

Dave and John were out fishing with me and topped off their day with four nice trout on a beautiful morning. George and Ron had lots of bite offs by bluefish, but boated several trout and blues to finish off a good morning trip. Brian and his family were down on vacation and found a good variety of fish to keep the kids busy that morning. Jim, Mike, Sid and Steven had a gorgeous morning to fish and found a variety biting for their morning adventure. Jim and Alan had a nice trout bite on their trip and brought some nice fish home for dinner. Bill boated a nice redfish and trout among other species to give us some fun fishing for the day. I had the grandkids, Chloe and Brody, out with dad, Ricky, for a morning of fun for the kids. Brody caught the most fish with Chloe coming in a close second. We have had lots of excitement on the water!

The mangroves have been very productive for us this past week. Both redfish and trout have been hanging around under the shadow lines. Work a live bait or DOA shrimp around the mangroves for a chance at a slot redfish this time of year. Our trout have been hanging in three to five feet of water on the grass flats. Try DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits or live bait on the flats. Beware of the many bluefish that have been around lately. They fight hard, but you can expect some bite offs in the process. Expect lots of jacks to be around the areas this time of year. The inlet has had some mackerel, jacks and ladyfish cruising around the glass minnows.

It's been warm out there when the winds die down. Keep plenty of water or Gatorade on the boat along with sunscreen. Keeping hydrated is important throughout the summer months. Sunstroke and sunburn isn't a fun thing to deal with so be prepared ahead of time. Have a fun June on the water!

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it’s an ADVENTURE!
