South Indian River Fishing Report 2/19

February 19, 2012

Inshore:

The mild days continue along the Treasure Coast this week. Winds have picked up now, but most days allow you to get out in the river. The ocean has been another story with one or two days a week that anglers can venture out. The water temperatures are still mild around the area and that means the fish are on the flats and feeding. We had some good days this week.

Bob and Chris were back out on a windy day, but managed trout, sheephead and the usual jacks and ladyfish to have a fun day out on the river. Kibby had the best day of the week. She landed two of three redfish that were all slot fish and a good number of nice size trout. Bill, Will and Blake found trout, jacks, ladyfish and a few snook. Blake had a nice redfish almost to the boat before it spit the hook on him. We had a lot of fun out on the river this past week!

Trout continue to feed in three to five feet of water. Most grass flats have been productive both north and south of Fort Pierce. DOA CAL jerk baits and shrimp along with live bait have all worked for us lately. We have found most of our redfish along the mangroves. CAL grub tails and live bait have worked well for us. Most of the snook fishing has been at night around the jetties and docks of the inlet.

Bluefish are scattered around the river and at the jetties. There are plenty of jacks and ladyfish to keep the young anglers busy. The surf has yielded whiting and pompano lately. Winter is just about over and we will soon transition into spring. Expect more windy days ahead, but mild temperatures should continue for us. Get out fishing soon!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/12

February 12, 2012

Inshore:

We finally had a cold front come through the area that cooled things off a bit, but not the fishing! Water temperatures will cool off a bit, but you can bet they will warm up quickly again. Fishing has been wonderful out on the river. A little wind and cold can't stop us from having fun out on the water!

Ron, Mike and Timberly were one on a day of trout, bluefish and other species in spite of a windy day out on the river. Ralph spent a morning out of the winds and caught 17 redfish in a short time around the mangroves. Bob and son, Chris, weren't about to come up short on their morning and boated 15 redfish that day. All the reds ranged in the 20 - 24 inch slot. DOA grub tails and live bait accounted for most of our catch.

Trout are still hanging on the flats. Most have come in three to five feet of water. DOA jerk baits, Deadly Combos and live bait are all working well for trout. There have been some bluefish cruising on the flats as well. Snook fishing has been best around the jetties and sea walls, mostly at night. There are plenty of sheephead around the bridges, docks and structure of the river.

We have a few more weeks of winter to worry about for now. Expect more windy days ahead though. Fishing has been great out there so plan on getting out soon!

The Treasure Coast Casters are having a yard sale this saturday, February 18th, to raise money for the group. The location will be at Dockside Inn in Fort Pierce. It's a non-profit FREE club for the kids to learn about boating and fishing and have lots of fun! Check them out on Facebook!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/6

February 6, 2012

Inshore:

We might be in the middle of winter, but someone forgot to tell Mother Nature! February has remained mild and warm with some windy days, but it's been fantastic so far. The water temperatures have stayed warm for this time of year and the fish have been feeding on the flats. Have some fun this month and get out fishing and enjoy the weather!

Trout have remained the best bite around the river. Fishing Deadly Combos, CAL jerk baits and live baits can get you in on the action around the grass flats. Harbor Branch, Bear Point and Round Island have all produced good numbers of trout. You will most likely have to deal with lots of jacks and ladyfish in the mix as well. Most of the redfish have come from the mangroves lately. You can still find them on the flats, but the mangroves have been productive for us the past several weeks. CAL grub tails or live baits will help you find some.

Snook season finally opened the first of the month and many eager anglers have been out seeking that slot fish. The jetties, docks and bridges are great places to snook fish. Live baits, Terror Eyz and feather jigs have all been good for snook fishing. The sheephead and black drum are around docks, bridges and structure. There are also lots of small snapper hanging around the bridges, too. Live or dead shrimp are popular for these fish. You can find bluefish and mackerel hanging around the mouth of the inlet and along the turning basin this month. Small shiny lures will work best on those toothy critters.

The mild conditions should continue for now. Expect the winds to pick up soon, but early mornings can get you out for some great action before the day gets windy. It's a great time of year to be fishing and this year has been especially good

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!
