South Indian River Fishing Report 3/9

Winds of March continued this week on the Treasure Coast. As we continue the transition into Spring, you can expect strong winds and rainy days part of the week and a few mild days as well. It's important to plan your adventures and use the winds to your advantage. Luckily, we have lots of places to get out of the worst of the winds to enjoy the fishing. Winter is almost over!

Fishing remains very good around the area. Snook have been biting around the inlet, turning basin and bridges most days for anglers. We have enjoyed a decent snook bite in the mornings on the trusty, root beer DOA TerrorEyz. Depending on where the winds allow you to fish comfortably, there have been sheepshead, pompano, mackerel, croakers and snapper to keep our guests busy catching fish. Throw in some jacks, ladyfish and other assorted species and your have a fun day on the water! The sheepshead have thinned out some as the breeding season wraps up for them, but the big croakers are coming into the river in nice numbers for their chance to spawn. I love this time of year with the variety of species to target. We might have to deal with the weather, but it's very rewarding!

Jerry and Lindy found the usual mix of species topped off by a nice pompano that they were hoping to catch again this year. Jerry started the day off with a nice snook that was an inch short of a slot fish. Bob, Dan and Mike were back for baseball in the area and the guys caught lots of fish in spite of 20 plus mph winds. Snapper, sheepshead, croakers, jacks and a number of other species kept us busy that blustery morning. Mike lost a nice snook to start the morning. Francis and Faith were back to visit again this year. The winds were better, but the rain was all around us. Croakers, sheepshead, jacks, mackerel and a variety of fish were available for them.

March came in like a lion bringing lots of winds to deal with on the water after a mild February on the Treasure Coast. You expect the windy days this time of year and they arrived in the usual style. Temperatures are still very mild and winter will be over soon. It's that time that you have to plan your fishing adventures carefully and use the winds to your advantage. Fishing has continued to be good this week!

I had the Johkman family out on a beautiful day with a morning and afternoon trip. The morning family had a super day with countless sheepshead along with pompano, trout, grouper and a nice black drum to top off the trip. The afternoon trip added more sheepshead and pompano along with grouper and jacks to make for a successful day for all. Mark and I were out on a scouting trip with mostly ladyfish and jacks, but managed a nice pompano and a playful dolphin to the day. Tom, Casey and Dan were back again this year. Casey topped off the day with a big black drum and everyone shared in catching lots of sheepshead, snapper, jacks and a couple nice pompano. Keith and James found the same bite with the sheepshead as did Tom and Beth. Mike, John and Chris started the day with a redfish and added the usual sheepshead, jacks, grouper and snapper to the catch. Pat, Dalton and Ethan were back down to visit catching a nice pompano along with sheepshead, a couple goliath grouper, jacks and snapper in the days catch. Todd and Ruth were out on a breezy day to explore the area with me. They began the day with both catching a snook on a DOA TerrorEyz. ladyfish, sheepshead and snapper rounded out the morning for us. It was a great time on the water this week!

The snook bite remains good around the inlet with live bait or DOA TerrorEyz. You can find redfish around mangroves or docks with live bait or DOA shrimp. Pompano are cruising in 4 - 6 feet of water and will take a DOA shrimp or Doc's Goofy Jig. Our trout have been in 4 - 6 feet of water. Sheepshead are still the best bite in the river again this week. March might be windy, but the fish have been hungry and there a lots to catch. Have a good month out there!
