March Fishing Forecast

March Fishing Forecast

Inshore:

March has arrived on the Treasure Coast and, traditionally, we can expect windy conditions along with some rain clouds most days. It might dictate where and when you can get on the water, but at least we aren't cutting holes in the ice to fish! Water temperatures will continue to rise and the fish will be actively feeding on the flats. Winter was a little milder for us in February. March brings the transition into Spring and things will warm up again. Take advantage of the good days and get out fishing soon!

As the sun warms up the water again, look for fish to travel into the shallows to feed. Trout will continue to be most prevalent in the deeper grass flats in two to four feet of water. Those anglers using live shrimp on popping corks, Deadly Combos, CAL jerk baits and top water will have the best chance at hooking up with a trout. I like to fish the edges of the shallows where the water drops off to these depths. You can find trout in four to six feet of water and they will move onto the shallower flats to let the sun warm them as the day goes on. Depending on weather conditions, there are many areas to fish. Round Island, Bear Point and Harbor Branch are always popular to fish in March.

Redfish will get more active this month and you can find some tailing on the flats in early mornings. Top water, DOA 2 ¾” shrimp, CAL grub tails or gold spoons are good choices for finding a spot tail on the flats. Don't forget to fish around the mangroves also. So far this winter, there has continued to be a good redfish population around the river and the fishing has been fantastic for them. I tend to like the east side of the river for redfish, but you can find them on the west side also. Work your baits slowly along the bottom for best results. This has been a good winter to allow us to enjoy a good redfish bite around the docks and mangroves with nice sized slot fish. Learn to read the water so you don’t miss what is happening around you.

Anglers will continue to target snook around the inlets, docks and bridges on the Treasure Coast. Live bait always works best, but feather jigs, TerrorEyz and DOA Bait Busters can also get you hooked up. Most of the action will be at night with best results on the high ends of the tides. As the water warms up around the area, the snook action will liven up also. Those fishing the flats can also find snook feeding early or late in the day. Fish the mangroves during the rest of the
day. There has been a very good juvenile snook population on the flats this year. Top water, twitch baits, TerrorEyz or CAL jerk baits can do the trick in March on the flats.

The pompano bite has been better this year once the water cooled down. It takes cooler weather bringing them into the area. Whiting, Bluefish and pompano will be hanging around the beaches this month. The inlet will be holding Spanish mackerel, jacks and bluefish. Jack Crevalle and ladyfish continue to haunt the river and provide fun catch for all. Bridges should give up catches of sand perch, sheepshead and black drum on live or dead shrimp. This year has been the best sheepshead bite in many years. They are not only tasty, but put up a good battle for anglers.

Spring is just around the corner on the Treasure Coast. It won't be long! Take some time to check all your equipment now and be ready as the weather improves to get out on the water. Make sure your reels are in good working order. Check your rods for broken or cracked tips and guides. How old in that line?? Get ready now on some of these windy days ahead, so you will be ready to head out to the water soon! Have a great March in 2017!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/16

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/16

Inshore

It has continued to be mild weather conditions around the Treasure Coast this past week. Warm days into the 80's and mild winds most days have made for some gorgeous fishing weather. Expect some windy days ahead with the weekly cold front moving through and spring is not far off for us. It has been another fun fishing week on the water.

As usual this time of year, sheepshead have been the best bite on the river. The Swieringa family was out with me and put on a show of catching sheepshead. It was nonstop with Colten even catching them on a bare jig. Keith and Cai were back on a slower morning, but caught jacks, sheepshead and ladyfish. Kevin and Brad were out on another beautiful day and caught trout, sheepshead, drum and jacks. The highlight of the day was when an eight foot bull shark came out of the water about two feet from the boat and took our fish. Got our attention! Three generations of the Faust family were out on a nice morning to fish. The boys, Dane and Preston, out fished everyone that day with a variety of species. Ron, Kyle, Don and Dan had lots of winds to deal with, but caught lots of fish for dinner. Ron got schooled by a big goliath grouper in the inlet that was too big for our equipment. It was an exciting week!

Our trout have been in deeper cuts again this week. DOA shad tails are good lures this time of year. Didn't see any pompano, but they are around. We lost a few nice mackerel at the boat this week on the high end of the tides. Look for redfish to be under docks or mangroves this time of year.

Remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/9

Inshore:

Summertime weather has been awesome this past week on the Treasure Coast! Temperatures ranged to almost 90 degrees on some days with light winds and an awesome bite on the river. We have had lots of exciting action and lots of smiling faces to show for it! Expect the winds to start again soon and a few more cold fronts to arrive each week as winter continues with mild conditions. It has been lots of fun this week!

Sheepshead has been the outstanding bite this week. We caught well over 150 sheepshead in three days this week and over half were over 12". It was non-stop action just about every day this week. Tony, Helen, Kathy and Agnes has a super day fishing around the river with lots of sheepshead headed home for dinner. John, Mike and Louie has a similar day fishing as did Tim, Steve and Andrew. Andrew added two nice pompano to the catch that day. Arlene and Matt found a similar bite with Arlene topping off the day with a nice redfish. Mike and Karen had a nice day with lots of fish including ending the day with a blast of ladyfish for added fun. Denny and Don had a beautiful morning with sheepshead and a nice redfish to finish off a great morning. Richard and Ed added a couple nice pompano to their catch list. It was an exciting week for all!

Redfish and pompano have been our other species that made for some awesome days fishing for my clients. The redfish have come from fishing docks around the area. There are some nice slots out there! DOA shrimp or live bait are great choices. Pompano have been scattered, but the ones we have found are in four feet of water or deeper on the grass flats. There are lots of jigs that work for pompano this time of year. Doc's Goofy Jigs and the 2.75 DOA shrimp are great lures for pomps. The snook bite has been good around the bridges and jetties at night lately. Have a great time enjoying the fishing!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/2

Inshore:

Winter dropped some cold weather on us this past week. I knew when I got in the truck and it said 34 degrees and there was ice on the windshield....it was cold! Aside from cool nights, the weather couldn't be more spectacular lately. Calm winds and the days warming up has made it worthwhile to deal with the coolness of the mornings. It has been a fun week again for us!

Don, Art and Sherman were back up to fish this month. They caught one short red to start off the day and added a good number of sheepshead to round out the morning. Bob and 7 year old, Alex, were out on another beautiful day in spite of a cold start. Alex caught lots of fish including sheepshead, snapper, grouper and jacks. Bob and I enjoyed seeing him smile all morning. Lynn, Ed and Rudy were out to celebrate Ed's birthday and they weren't disappointed. Together they caught lots of sheepshead and snapper plus six nice trout and two very nice pompano. We started out very cold, but things warmed up quickly. Richard and Ed found a good number of snapper, sheepshead and jacks to keep them busy. They added a couple nice pompano to top off the morning. It was nice to see the calm weather help us to have a great time this week!

Our trout has been in deeper cuts and channels this week. The pompano have been in the same areas. For artificial lures try a DOA shad tail on a 1/4 oz jig head. Fish them slowly along the bottom in the deeper cuts of the river. Snook season is open now and most of the action has been around the bridges and inlet. The incoming tides have been the most productive. Our redfish continue to come around the docks with live shrimp or a DOA shrimp. The mackerel have begun to show up around the inlets this week. It's a great time of year to get out fishing!

Remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!
