South Indian River Fishing Report 2/20

Inshore:

We have enjoyed some fantastic weather on the Treasure Coast this week! Bright, sunny skies and light winds have been the norm for us lately. It's great to live in a state that didn't get any snow this winter! Spring is definitely on its way and things should only improve each week. Expect some windy days in the future and enjoy the great fishing action around the area. The sun has warmed the water up in the upper sixties to the low seventies and the fish have been hungry this week.

The best bite around the areas that we have fished this week continue to be black drum, sheepshead and redfish. There are plenty of other species out there to keep your rods bending as well. Ladyfish, jacks, snapper are just a few of the species that are all over the river and lots of fun for the little ones. We have caught a few nice trout and now that the water is warming up, you can expect that bite to improve each day. CAL jerk baits work great on the sea trout. Docks have been very productive for us on a variety of fish. Our redfish are coming from the docks and mangroves. Most are juveniles, but fun to catch. DOA shrimp or CAL paddle tails are super redfish lures. Redfish should be plentiful this year!

I had the privilege of seeing lots of familiar faces this week along with making some new friends. We had some exciting days on the water and caught lots of fish! Don, Art and Sherman were back for another fishing adventure. They found mackerel, sheepshead and a variety of species for a fun filled morning. Russ and Carl found black drum and sheepshead biting along with a redfish bite that landed them 28 juvenile redfish for the morning. Shane and Roxanne found the redfish bite still on and caught 13 juvenile fish along with sheepshead, black drum and other species to top off a morning of fishing. Shane and Marty were out the next day and found bluefish, sheepshead and a nice sea trout along with the usual variety of fish biting. Eric and Tyler were out for a beautiful morning on the river and found redfish, sheepshead, ladyfish and jacks among the species caught that morning. Andy, Stephanie and Will were back again this year. Mom rode along with them to enjoy the morning, too. After a super morning of black drum, sheepshead, jacks and ladyfish, Will just missed a big redfish. They were treated to a show by the dolphins and manatees to top off a great morning on the water. Don, Dee, Sandy and Craig found a bit more wind on their afternoon excursion. They caught sheepshead, trout, snapper and jacks in spite of a windy day. We had an exciting week on the river!

Whiting has been plentiful along the beaches with some pompano, bluefish and jacks mixed in the catch. The inlet and jetties have held Spanish mackerel, jacks, bluefish, snapper and sheepshead for anglers fishing those areas. I've had a number of kids this week and the ladyfish and jacks have provided some fun action for everyone. The action has been good all over the river this week and will only get better in March! Have some fun and get out fishing!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/13

Inshore:

February has turned out to be a super month for mild weather and outstanding fishing action around the Treasure Coast. The cold fronts have become weaker as the month progresses and the sun has been shining most days for us on the water. As we continue to transition into spring conditions, expect the usual cool fronts each week and lots of sunshine ahead for anglers. The winds will continue, but we usually get one or two days each week that will be milder. Remember that you must fish your bait or lures very slowly. Water temperatures are cooler and the fish will be lethargic most of the time. Working your lures slower will give them more of an opportunity to take the bait. It's been a fantastic month so far!

We have had lots of action around the river lately. A good variety of species to keep anglers excited. Sheepshead and black drum have been a staple for us this month, but we have had very good success with the redfish bite. Bob and Betty were out with me and found plenty of sheepshead, black drum, snapper and a few redfish on their morning. John and Bob found a good trout bite on the grass flats along with some redfish and many other species. Gray celebrated his 12th birthday with his dad, Jeff. They teamed up for six redfish and a variety of other fish. Gray hooked a huge trout that got off just before getting it to the boat. Kevin and Bob had a super day boating 14 redfish to top off a great morning. Joe and Eve got into some nice size black drum around the docks on a morning that ended up with lots of action for them on the river. Charlie, Sue, Rena and Brent had a wonderful morning to enjoy catching a nice variety of fish. We had lots of action this week to go along with some very nice weather.

We continue to find redfish around the docks and mangroves of the river. DOA shrimp or live bait will help you find some nice action. Our trout bite improves each day as the sun warms up the water. CAL jerk baits have been working great on the grass flats. Round Island, Queen's Cove and Bear Point have all been productive on the trout. Sheepshead and black drum are plentiful around the docks, channel edges and bridges of the river. They provide plenty of action and are quite tasty for the table as well. Whiting and croakers are the main catch on the beaches. They are finding some pompano and bluefish in the surf, too. It's been a busy week and anglers have enjoyed some great fishing action. Have fun out there...Spring is just around the corner!

South Indian River Fishing Report 2/5

Inshore:

We have enjoyed some fantastic weather and fishing as February arrived with sunny skies and light winds on most of our days on the water. It is a welcome change from January conditions. Water temperatures have warmed up nicely to the low to mid 70's and the fish have been hungry! We are beginning our transition into Spring conditions. Even though we will get our weekly cold fronts moving through the Treasure Coast, you can expect them to become milder as each week passes by. It's a wonderful time of year to enjoy the outdoors!

The variety of fish in the river continues to keep our clients smiling and rods bending. The bluefish and pompano are around the river now along with all the other wintertime favorites. Bluefish will hit anything shiny and pompano with take live shrimp, sand fleas or Doc's Goofy Jigs. The sheepshead and black drum bite has been excellent around the bridges, channel edges and docks of the river. Live or dead shrimp on a small hook or jig head will work best. There are lots of 15" mutton snapper around the turning basin. Fun to catch for the little ones, but just shy of keeper size. Jacks and ladyfish are everywhere right now. Again, the little anglers will love catching them. It's a fun time of year to take the kids fishing.

We are still getting some nice redfish around the mangroves and docks of the river. Expect a lot of shorts, but those will be in the upper slot by the end of summer. CAL paddle tails (411 color) on a 1/16th oz. jig head is my favorite go-to lure in winter for redfish. Fish can be skittish with the clear waters of winter and this won't scare them. The trout bite picked up again this week with the warmer weather. I rely on the CAL 4" jerk bait (407 color) on the same 1/16th oz. jig head to catch some nice trout this time of year. You can also have very good success with DOA shrimp or Deadly Combos this month. Snook fishing around the inlet docks and jetties has been good on the higher ends of the tide for anglers using DOA Terror Eyz and live baits. I love the variety of fish that you can catch during the winter months. The surf has been good for whiting, bluefish and some pompano for beach anglers. Most anglers are using live or dead shrimp, but silver spoons, Doc's Goofy Jigs and CAL shad tails can get you some good action as well.

Tom and his daughter, Casey, were out on a foggy morning that turned out to be a gorgeous day on the water. They were kept busy catching sheepshead, drum, redfish and short snook on their morning adventure. Rich and his son, Mark, were back this year to enjoy a morning on the water. After another foggy start, they found lots of sheepshead along with some black drum and trout to make for a successful trip. Enjoy the fishing...the weather has been outstanding for us!
